Public Architecture’s Day Labor Station is currently on display in San Francisco. A three-quarter scale model of the Day Labor Station, hand-built by UC Berkeley graduate student Nathan Brown, is showcased along with the other winners of the 2007 Spark! Awards in a stunning gallery located in the new Autodesk space at One Market Street in San Francisco. The gallery is open to the public on the first Wednesday of every month from 1 to 5pm.

Econnovation
Bay Area Green Design Exhibition
April 18 through June 19, 2008

Public Architecture is honored to have the Day Labor Station featured in the Econnovation design show. The three-quarter scale model of the Station, which was built last summer by UC Berkeley architecture student Nathan Brown, will be on display at the exhibition.

Econnovation, is a green design show based in the San Francisco Bay Area that is a multidisciplinary showcase of new, ‘ecological+economical+innovative’ solutions pioneered locally. The show, which features an exhibition and a series of interactive workshops and events, is sponsored by Knoend, Scully Design, and Design Guild SF.

The Day Labor Station will be featured along with one of Public Architecture’s other Design Campaigns, ScrapHouse.


AIA San Francisco
Design Awards Exhibition

Public Architecture was pleased to receive a Design Award for the Day Labor Station from the AIA San Francisco. The Station was awarded a Citation in the Unbuilt Category. The project will be exhibited along with Public Architecture’s pro bono program, The 1% Solution, which was given a Special Achievement award.


AIA National Convention
Design Exposition
May 15 through 17 2008

Public Architecture’s Day Labor Station will be featured in the Design Exhibition at this year’s AIA National Convention in Boston. The Station integrates wells with this year’s convention theme, ‘We the People.’ The convention calls upon architects to exchange ideas with peers and industry leaders on the architect’s role in society and the power of architecture on behalf of all people.
 

Van Alen Institute
Open House New York Exhibition

Public Architecture and Ryan Associates are fortunate to host a special reception at the Van Alen Institute, celebrating the Day Labor Station. The reception coincides with the conclusion of the Cooper-Hewitt’s “Design for the Other 90%” exhibition. During the opening reception on October 3, representatives of Public Architecture and Ryan Associates will be on-hand to discuss the project as well as future development of the Station.
 

Cooper-Hewitt National Design Museum
Design for the Other 90%

Public Architecture is honored to have the Day Labor Station included in the Design for the Other 90%, a groundbreaking exhibition on view at the Cooper-Hewitt National Design Museum in New York. The exhibition highlights efforts by designers to create affordable and socially responsible objects for the vast majority of the world's population not traditionally served by professional designers. Featured projects range from the Treadle Pump to the Katrina Furniture Project to the Day Labor Station. As a project that addresses a community that has often lacked this access, the Day Labor Station is a natural fit for this exhibition.

In preparation for the exhibition, Public Architecture teamed up with Ryan Associates, a leading construction company with offices in San Francisco, Honolulu, and New York, which generously provided the labor and materials to build--on a pro bono basis--a full-scale section of the prototype of the Day Labor Station. The exhibition project team also consisted a nationally-recognized photographer, Elena Dorfman, and a leading graphic design firm, MendeDesign. Together, they produced a compelling series of portraits of day laborers that allowed the workers to be viewed not as faceless members of a stereotyped group, but rather individuals with their own needs and desires that actually reflect tenets and aspirations that are at the heart of our society. The portraits and selections from the interviews will be featured in a book and video that accompanies the exhibition.
